Lots of people over recent years have decided to go to warmer climes for the winter, as in many cases the costs are far less than staying home and toughing it out. Homeowners who used to simply turn down the thermostat in a vacated house for the winter are now closing down the plumbing system aswell. They are doing this as a result of the prohibitively high energy costs incurred by leaving it running. Winterizing your plumbing is a virtually cost-free alternative to frozen pipes but if you are unsure and not too practical around the home, Barking Plumbers can give a comprehensive service for this issue. So below there are listed a number of actions to take prior to leaving.
Isolate the main shut off valve or contact your supply company turn off the service to the house.
Starting at the top floor, open all taps, both inside and out.
When the water has finished dripping from the taps, open the plug at the main shutoff valve if possible (you may have to contact the water provider), and let it drain.
Isolate the power or gas to the water heater and open its drain valve.
Remove the clean out plugs on all sink traps or remove the traps, if necessary.
Once emptied, replace them and fill with plumbing antifreeze mixed with water in the proportions specified for car in your climate.
You won’t be able to drain tub and shower taps. Instead, add at least a full quart of antifreeze.
Please do not put any antifreeze inside a dishwasher or clothes washing machines.
If your home has a basement drain or a main house trap, fill each one with full-strength antifreeze.
All the actions above can be carried out professionally by a Barking Plumber who is fully trained in all plumbing issues.
