Tools and Materials:
1). Adjustable spanner.
2). PTFE tape.
3). New stop tap.
There are many outside taps that have double check valves fitted, however but they quite often failed to work during extreme weather. Regulations now state that every outside tap fitted must have a check valve in the house. Old outside taps were alright to keep their built-in check valve. When this is replaced it is fine to fit an exact same tap with the valve built in. But if you do replace such the tap with one that doesn’t feature a built-in valve you must fit a double check valve inside the house and as close as possible to the outdoor tap you are fitting. A Barking Plumber can do this.
Method:
1). Turn off the main cold water supply. The tap to be fitted needs to have an isolation valve fitted so you can turn the water off without isolating the whole of the home. Make sure the water is off by opening a tap. If your existing tap doesn’t have an isolation valve, then you should fit one. This valve will allow you to isolate the tap in winter, stopping the risk of a flood if it froze. Barking Plumbersdeal with all plumbing emergencies.
2). Using the adjustable spanner, unscrew the older tap. Remember the number of turns it take to help you with the new fit. Use 4 turns of PTFE tape on the thread of the new tap, turning clockwise. Screw the new tap to the back plate and tighten it up with the same number of turns you needed to remove the old tap.
When the tap in the correct position, close it off and turn the water back on and check for leaks all around. If there is a leak, then repeat the process but with a little more tape, or maybe even some jointing compound on the thread but make sure that the compound used is suitable for drinking water.
